Worth Dying For by Kory M Shrum is the fifth book in the supernatural suspense series Dying for a Living. Jesse has supernatural powers and the ability to come back from the dead as long as her brain isn’t destroyed. Unfortunately for Jesse, plenty of people are out to kill her –permanently – and take her powers. Chief among these people is Caldwell, the head of the unified church, who, like Jesse, has supernatural powers, himself.

The story begins on New Year’s Eve just as everyone is ushering in the new year. Jesse and her friends celebrate before returning to their hotel room to prepare for what they hope will be their final battle against Caldwell. Unfortunately, they soon learn that their pictures are plastered all over the news and they’re being called suspected terrorists, courtesy of Caldwell.

As the hunt for Jesse intensifies and Caldwell gets closer, Jesse is forced to adapt and improvise so that her group can make it to their destination – the site they’ve chosen for the final showdown. Throughout her journey, Jesse learns more about the truth behind her supernatural powers and how the outcome of her battle with Caldwell will help shape the future of the world itself.

While there is plenty of action in this book, it’s also a lot of fun. Each of the characters – particularly Jesse – are quirky and entertaining. They help to keep the story from taking itself too seriously and often times lighten up the mood just as things seem like they could easily get dark. I especially had to laugh at Jesse’s pug obsession. Not only does Winston, her pug, travel with her on her mission to save the world, but she also wears pug socks and has a pug watch. It’s little details like these throughout the book that really help to lighten the mood and keep the story fresh.

When I started this book, I was a little nervous I would have no idea what was going on. I’ve read the first book, Dying for a Living, but I haven’t had a chance to check the others out yet. I can honestly say, though, that I immensely enjoyed this book and didn’t feel lost at all. Kory does an amazing job making sure the reader is up to speed without ever slowing the story’s pace down to fill out the back story. Particularly after reading this book, I’m excited to go back and read the others. I also can’t wait for the next book!

I really cannot recommend the Dying for a Living series enough. It’s fun, exciting, quirky, and entertaining. Best of all, you can get the first book FREE on Amazon! I highly recommend you check it out. Once you do, I don’t think you’ll be able to put this series down. If you’ve read the other books or if you want to skip ahead, you can also get Worth Dying For on Amazon, too. If you do read it (and I really think you should), be sure to leave a review of your own!
